Amazon’s supplement marketplace does somewhere north of $3 billion in annual supplement sales. Every seller with a dietary supplement ASIN has run into the COA review process at some point — and most have a story about a suspension email, a listing removal, or weeks lost to back-and-forth with Amazon’s compliance team.
The certificate of analysis is the document that’s supposed to prevent all of that. But a surprising number of sellers either don’t know what Amazon is actually scrutinizing, or they receive a COA from their contract manufacturer and assume it’ll sail through without a second look. Neither assumption holds up under review.
After working with hundreds of supplement brands navigating Amazon’s compliance requirements, the pattern we see most often is consistent: the COA problems that kill listings aren’t usually about the testing itself. They’re about the documentation.
What Amazon’s Compliance Team Is Actually Looking For
Amazon doesn’t publish a single exhaustive COA checklist — which is part of why sellers keep getting caught off guard. But their Supplement Listing requirements, combined with their Restricted Products policies, point clearly to a few non-negotiables.
First, the testing lab must hold ISO 17025:2017 accreditation. This is the international standard for testing and calibration laboratory competence — the version most recently updated from the 2005 release. Accreditation must come from a recognized body; in the US, that’s typically A2LA (American Association for Laboratory Accreditation) or Perry Johnson Laboratory Accreditation (PJLA). The accreditation number has to appear on the COA itself. If it doesn’t, the document fails review before anyone reads a single test result.
Second — and this one trips up even experienced sellers — the scope of accreditation matters as much as accreditation itself. A lab can be ISO 17025 certified and still issue a COA that Amazon rejects, because the tests listed fall outside what that lab is actually accredited to perform. We’ve seen this happen with brands that used a metals-focused lab to also verify microbiological purity. The micro results, even if technically valid, carry no weight under ISO 17025 principles for tests outside the lab’s accredited scope.
Third, test results must map directly to your product’s label claims. Amazon cross-references the COA against what your ASIN label actually says you’re selling. If your protein powder claims 25 grams of protein per serving, the COA needs to demonstrate that. If you’re selling a zinc supplement at a stated potency, the assay result must be present and pass. An off-label COA — generated for a generic formulation that doesn’t exactly match your labeled product — is a common and costly mistake.
Step 1: Audit Your Label Claims Before You Order Testing
This sounds obvious, and yet it’s the step most sellers skip. Before submitting a sample to a third-party lab, go through your product label and build a test matrix. Every claimed ingredient needs a corresponding test. Every structure/function claim needs to be supportable by the data in the COA.
Under FDA 21 CFR Part 111.75, you’re also required to conduct identity testing on every lot of dietary ingredients you receive — regardless of what your contract manufacturer’s COA says. That’s a regulatory obligation separate from Amazon’s requirements. Addressing both at once with a single, comprehensive COA makes compliance cleaner and cheaper.
Establish your specifications before testing begins. The COA should compare results against pre-established limits, not leave a reviewer to guess whether 22 g of protein per serving is acceptable when the label claims 25 g. For potency, FDA expects label accuracy to fall within 80–120% of the claimed amount for most ingredients, though some USP monographs are tighter than that.
Step 2: Choose a Lab Whose Scope Covers Your Full Test Panel
When requesting quotes, ask the lab directly: “Is each test method I need listed within your ISO 17025 scope of accreditation?” A reputable lab will answer clearly. Most will share their accreditation certificate or direct you to the A2LA online directory, where you can verify scope entries yourself.
For a typical dietary supplement listed on Amazon, you’ll likely need coverage across:
- Identity testing — HPLC, FTIR, or DNA-based methods depending on ingredient type
- Potency/assay — quantitative analysis of active ingredients against label claims
- Microbiological purity — total aerobic plate count, yeast and mold, and specified pathogens including Salmonella, Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli O157:H7, and Listeria monocytogenes
- Heavy metals — arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury at minimum; California Prop 65 limits apply to any product sold to CA consumers
- Contaminants — pesticide residues for botanical ingredients; aflatoxins for susceptible commodities like peanut, tree nut, or grain-derived materials
That’s a multi-method, multi-discipline panel. Not every lab holds ISO 17025 accreditation across all of those areas. Some are accredited for chemistry but not microbiology. If you split testing across two labs, each COA must reference the same lot number, and you’ll need to upload both documents together for Amazon’s review. Be explicit about this when you submit.
Step 3: Submit a Representative Sample — and Document the Chain of Custody
The sample you send to the lab must represent the actual product you’re listing. For finished goods, that means a sealed, retail-ready unit from the same production lot going to Amazon fulfillment centers. For batches over 10,000 units, standard sampling practice — referenced in USP General Chapter <1> and aligned with ASTM E105 — recommends pulling samples from multiple points in the batch, not just the top of a pallet.
Document everything about the sample submission: lot number, batch size, date of manufacture, expiration date, and who pulled the sample. If Amazon ever questions the COA’s authenticity, a clear chain of custody is what makes the document defensible.
Step 4: Review the COA Against This Checklist Before You Upload
Once you receive the COA from the lab, don’t just forward it to Amazon. Check it against every field:
- Lab name and physical address appear prominently
- ISO 17025 accreditation number and accrediting body are clearly identified
- Product name on the COA matches your ASIN label exactly — character for character, including flavor names or unit sizes
- Lot number or batch identifier is present
- Test date falls within Amazon’s acceptable window (typically 12 months; some categories require 6 months)
- Each test method is cited by name or number (e.g., AOAC 2012.19, USP <62>, EPA Method 6020B)
- Results are compared against defined specification limits, not listed as raw numbers without context
- A clear pass/fail determination appears for each individual test
- An authorized signatory — lab director or quality manager — has signed the document
Missing even one of these fields can generate a manual review flag or an outright rejection. We’ve had clients come to us with COAs from other labs that were technically accurate but formatted without a pass/fail column. Amazon’s review team rejected those documents twice before we reissued a properly structured version. The test results were identical. The format was what changed.
Step 5: Know the Expiration Clock — and Build Retesting Into Your Calendar
A COA has a shelf life. Amazon generally requires that supplement COAs be dated no more than 12 months before the time of submission. Higher-risk categories — products with specific health claims or novel ingredients — may face a stricter 6-month window.
For sellers doing ongoing FBA replenishment, this means building a retesting schedule into your production calendar. Every new lot requires its own COA. You cannot reuse a COA from a prior production run, even if the formulation is identical. Each lot is a separate testing event.
Plan for a 10–15 business day turnaround for a full supplement panel at most ISO 17025-accredited labs. Rush services are available but typically add 25–50% to the standard cost. Building testing lead time into your production schedule is almost always cheaper than paying emergency rush fees under a suspended-listing deadline — and significantly less stressful.
When Your COA Still Gets Rejected
If Amazon rejects a COA, the appeal process starts with understanding exactly which requirement failed. Amazon’s rejection notices aren’t always specific, which makes troubleshooting frustrating. A few things to check immediately: confirm the lab’s accreditation certificate was active at the date of testing (most accreditations require annual renewal), verify the scope of accreditation covers every test listed, and confirm the product name on the COA is an exact match to your listing.

But it exists because the dietary supplement industry operates under 21 CFR Part 111 with limited pre-market FDA approval — third-party testing with a credible, well-documented COA is the primary verification mechanism the market relies on. Getting it right doesn’t just protect your listing. It means you can stand behind the product you’re selling.
